Background:
Opened in 1979, Kyle Academy reached sixth year status in 1984. At present the school serves the southern part of Ayr and accommodation is of a 'high standard'. Facilities include four specialist computer suites, a library/resource area, gymnasium, games hall and tiered lecture theatre. Two hockey pitches, two rugby pitches, two soccer pitches and two hard courts for netball are all located on site, and pupils also have access to the local swimming pool, squash courts, curling and ice skating rink, theatre and other specialist facilties. A range of activities and clubs operate out of school hours, including art, athletics, badminton, basketball, board games, chess, debating, drama, football, hill walking, hockey, choir, netball, orchestra, science, video, volleyball and weight training. The school was recently awarded a Sportsmark award in recognition of achievements in this area. Pupils also have the opportunity to participate in one of the many skiing weekends or foreign holidays organised by the school. Children are encouraged to become involved in charitable projects and traditionally the whole school makes a 'major' effort to support Children in Need. Pupils are often selected for district, county and national sports teams, in addition to having been successful in creative writing, debating and cooking competitions.
